04 Mar Love Lock Bridge, Paris
Who doesn’t love a little romance huh? – We ticked off visiting a Love Lock Bridge (Pont des Arts) whilst in Paris and even added our names to the forever growing collection of padlocks. Well in such a romantic city, we were never going to say no were we 😉
So what is a love lock I hear you say? A love lock is a padlock which lovers lock to a bridge, fence, gate, or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Typically the persons names or initials are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away to symbolise unbreakable love.
We do try consider ourselves to be responsible travellers wherever we go, but sometimes an opportunity arises and you just have to give in and go with the flow… (please don’t frown, where’s your romance?!) Please put the idea of vandalism at the back of your mind, as this is something beautiful to do with your loved one. – Our thoughts were that if the Mayor of Paris didn’t like the idea, the padlocks wouldn’t still be around by the time we visited (Love locks have been popular since the early 2000’s and even began before WWII!).
Now the Bridge itself, Pont des Arts is sometimes served as a place for art exhibitions, to which we purchased a beautiful hand drawn sketch of a giraffe that turns onto the Eiffel Tower.. crazy and cute, we loved it! 😛 Purchased for €10, rolled up in yesterdays Parisian newspaper, and into a bag… we now had something to admire and always remind us of this amazing trip and beautiful city. You will discover many talented artists and photographers in the area selling their art pieces to tourists walking by who are drawn to the romantic area and musicians playing along the river.
We even gave in to a guy who made us some cute matching bracelets right in front of us, the massive benefit was that he was friendly enough to take picture after picture of us on the bridge (after seeing us attempting some selfies!) – at one point I thought he wasn’t going to stop papping us… with our own camera!
The next time you are in Paris, why not take a trip over the Love Lock bridges. Tired of the crowds at the Louvre? These bridges are a beautiful place for a stroll across the river Seine or even a relaxing picnic during the summer.
We do respect those who don’t like the locks or don’t think they should be there, but we personally think it’s a wonderful testament to the spirit of love in the city of love! Have you been to the Love Lock bridge in Paris? Participated? Let us know your thoughts…
