It’s safe to say that Indonesia is one of the most culturally diverse locations on the planet. If you have the chance to go, you should really try and visit some of these top locations.

Bali

Bali is certainly one of the most visited locations in Southeast Asia. It’s also one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world too. The island is blessed with wide open beaches, crystal clear waters and even volcanic scenery too. It’s a top tourist destination and it’s become very popular over the last few years. Bali is predominantly Hindu and this gives the island a very different vibe when compared to some of the other islands. You’ll also find a lot of people who specialise in holistic healing, as the island has a unique atmosphere. If you want to make sure that you aren’t left short of things to do, then you’ll be glad to know that there are a ton of romantic escapes and that there are also boutique shopping opportunities. You have endless Hindu temples and volcanic villages that still showcase the traditions that Bali is famous for. If you are looking for accommodation, then try and find a rumah disewakan.

Sumatra

Sumatra is one of the biggest islands in Indonesia. It’s also the sixth-largest island in the world.

The huge location is actually split by the equator. It’s a dream come true if you are an adventurer or if you are interested in seeing endangered species. Sumatra is one of two places in the world where you can see orangutans in the wild and it’s a tourist hotspot too. A lot of tourists are attracted to the northern part of the island. Here, you’ll find Lake Toba, which is one of the biggest volcanic lakes in the world.  Nearby, smaller islands are also inhabited by tribes.

Lombok

Lombok is Bali’s neighbour. It can be found to the east and it is also a popular travel destination. You have Mount Rinjani, which is actually an active volcano. It dominates the landscape and it is also 12,224 feet tall. You can actually climb the volcano as well, but you will need to make sure that you have a guide and a permit. Only then are you legally allowed to make the trip. The biggest attraction in Lombok is actually the Gili islands. You can visit them directly from Lombok and they’re very popular with backpackers. Gili Meno is one of the smallest islands but it isn’t too secluded. You’ll find a ton of natural beauty here and it really does provide the perfect backdrop for a romantic week away.

Java

Java is between Sumatra and Bali and it is one of the most populated islands in the world. 60% of Indonesia’s population call this island their home, and it’s incredibly busy. You may find that sometimes the culture is crowded but on the flip side, it’s the best way for you to get the insight you need to really understand the Indonesian culture. Java is the centre of the famous coffee and the Krakatoa volcano is also very well-known too. In 1883, it erupted, and the blast was the biggest and loudest sound in history. You could hear it from 3,000 miles away!

East Nusa Tenggara

This location may be a mouthful to say, but it includes the islands of Komodo, Flores, Timor and even the islands that stretch across Lombok too. Flores is the ideal location if you are a rugged traveller who likes to get their hands dirty. You have bumpy roads that stretch to numerous villages and you also have beaches that are very underdeveloped. You can go sightseeing and you can also take in some of the natural beauty that is all around you. Of course, you should note that Komodo is famous for the Komodo dragons that reside there. You will have to cross over some of the most dangerous currents in the world to get here but it is well worth it. The diving in this area is incredibly challenging, but the rewards speak for themselves.

Sulawesi

This island can be found east of Borneo. It’s very unique and the experience you’ll have here is tough and different. You’ll have to make your way across the landscape and this is not for the faint of heart. You need to have a high level of physical fitness, but that being said, you’ll also give yourself the chance to see some of the most incredible sights in the world. This is for the most experienced travellers, and it is also very diverse.
